In August of 2022, residents of Jackson, Mississippi, were without clean drinking water after heavy rain caused the Pearl River to crest just below the major flood stage.

Jackson, Mississippi experienced a long, dry, rainless summer from July to September of 2022 and 2023. Dead magnolias in the urban forest near Jackson are indicative of drought conditions last summer.

About 12,000 customers, largely in west and south Jackson, saw low to no water pressure during a winter freeze in January 2024. (Mississippi Today)

On May 10, 2024, the Jackson area experienced multiple tornado warnings, and many homes and powerlines were damaged.

In August of 2023, an overnight grass fire in Raymond, MS, spread rapidly. At the time, Hinds County and 39 other counties were under "burn bans." During "burn bans," NO outdoor burning of any kind is allowed because fires can spread so quickly. (WBLT)

During severe weather events, older homes and homes that need maintenance can be more vulnerable to high winds, heavy rains, and severe heat or cold. Older homes may be located closer to mature trees which can cause damage when they fall. Roofs in need of repair can result in leaks and missing shingles. People living in drafty homes often have higher electricity and gas bills.

Temperatures in the City of Jackson, MS are higher than in nearby areas with more grass, open space, and trees. This is known as a “heat island” effect. A lack of naturally occurring heat absorption (such as trees) and results in extremely high temperatures in the city (NASA).

Old or broken pipes in homes and pipes carrying water from treatment can result in dirtier water. Some old pipes were made or connected with lead, which can lead to sickness and learning problems. Broken water pipes under the ground can allow other chemicals to get into drinking water, which is very dangerous if broken sewer pipes are nearby.

Air, water, and material pollution can expose residents to dangerous chemicals or bacteria. Depending on what is polluting the environment, people may experience brief illnesses, chronic diseases like asthma, or more serious long-term conditions. Communities located near major polluters are often called "frontline communities."

Homes built in low areas and near creeks and rivers can experience more frequent flooding. This can damage other property, such as vehicles. If there is pollution nearby, water can carry dangerous chemicals into homes. People who live in these areas often pay higher insurance rates that make housing and vehicle use harder to afford. Areas where damage happens over and over are called "sacrifice zones."
